Decorative Ways to Finish a New Concrete Slab

Decorative Ways to Finish a New Concrete Slab ottawa

Concrete is very versatile and can be customized in many different ways to achieve the right finish. If you’ve just installed a new concrete slab, the world is your oyster because the surface is perfect and won’t require any additional preparation to get the result you want. At Custom Concrete Floors, we’ve applied a number of decorative finishes on new concrete slabs including:

This is the most common decorative finish for concrete floors and when utilized correctly, it can look stunning. We apply acid-based chemical stains on the surface and this provides a rich, luxurious colour that can’t be replicated by other coatings and dyes. The stain isn’t just a topical treatment; it sinks into the concrete and reacts chemically with it. Once the stain has sunk in, it won’t budge and will last for many years to come.

Dyes and Colors

You can paint the concrete surface with any colour you want and get a vivid and bright floor. Dyes contain smaller particles that can penetrate the porous surface and give a solid wash of colour. Unlike stains, the finish isn’t watercolour-like, so it’s great for floors that require bright colours like sports courts or residential floors with decorative patterns.

Polishing Concrete Flooring

Polished concrete looks stunning, especially if the surface is buffed to a glossy, almost mirror-like finish. This is a low-maintenance, no-wax floor that will enhance the overall beauty of your property. There are many different levels of polish so you can choose anything from flat matte to high-gloss finish based on your needs. If you add glass or stone aggregates to the floor, polishing will expose them and that can give you a unique, stand-out pattern that can’t be replicated by any other flooring material.

Stenciling is a great way to add character to your floor because you can create any pattern or design. It looks grand and luxurious but only a skilled professional will be able to create this. The stenciled design needs to be precise and carefully planned, otherwise it may look a little busy. We have several years of experience in this field and will make sure your stenciled floors look great.

Carpet Glue Removal Services in Ottawa

carpet glue removal services ottawa

Up until a few years ago, carpeting was one of the most popular flooring materials. It’s affordable, offers good insulation, and is comfortable under your feet. What most people don’t realize is that they can be a nightmare to remove. When you carpet is old and worn down, you need to replace it because you can only get it professionally cleaned so many times.

Unfortunately, once you remove a carpet, your job isn’t done because the subfloor will be covered with carpet glue that needs to be removed. We at Custom Concrete Floors can help you deal with this problem and offer carpet glue removal services in Ottawa.

Why Should You Remove Carpet Glue?

No matter what kind of flooring you wish to install, you need to make sure the flooring surface is properly prepared for it. The subfloor must be completely clean, free of unevenness or debris. Carpet glue will make it difficult for any floor treatment to adhere properly to the surface.

Why You Need to Hire a Professional

Removing carpet glue from the surface isn’t easy, especially if it has settled into the concrete & completely adhered to it. It’s a difficult and time-consuming task that’s best left to a professional. An experienced contractor will know how to remove the glue without causing any damage to the subfloor. This is especially important if you want concrete floors for your property. This process requires skill, experience, and the right equipment because it’s not easy to remove glue.

How Do We Remove Glue?

The process is simple to understand and is done over a few days. We use heavy grinders with plates of different grit levels to remove all the glue from the surface. The diamond abrasive grinders slowly remove the layer of glue and make the floor even. Usually a few rounds of the grinder is enough to remove the glue unless it has truly sunken into the concrete.

A professional concrete floor contractor will always double-check to see whether all of the glue is removed before they consider their job done. The subfloor won’t take stains or coatings easily if there are still patches of carpet glue left behind on the surface. It’s important to remove all traces of glue to ensure the best finish.

If you have any questions about carpet glue removal services or want a free, no-obligation estimate, give us at Custom Concrete Floors a call at 613 327 9127. You can also fill in this contact us form and we’re reply as soon as possible.

Common Problems with Polished Concrete Floors

Polished concrete floors are very attractive and resilient. These types of floors can withstand a considerable amount of wear and tear and require very little maintenance. However, this doesn’t mean that the surface is completely problem-free. At Custom Concrete Floors, we want our customers to make an informed decision so we’ve put together a list of common problems that occur with polished concrete floors.custom concrete flooring ottawa floor preparation

Discolouration and Stains

This isn’t a problem with a freshly poured concrete slab, but if you have an old, discoloured and oil-stained floor, you may have a reason to worry. The polishing process might remove the stains if they’ve not penetrated too deep into the concrete and this will give you an even and clear finish. But if the stains have penetrated into the old floor, polishing the slab won’t hide them. In fact, the process might even highlight them. That’s why it’s important to inspect the condition of the floor carefully before it’s polished.

Polished floors have a shine to them and even the matte finish will reflect light to some extent. If the floor is perfectly level, you don’t have to worry about the gloss or appearance. But if the floor isn’t level, you’ll see waves on the surface wherever light reflects off the polished surface and this doesn’t look that great. These waves will emphasize on the unevenness of the floor and have an impact on the overall design of your property.

The edges of the concrete floor are always less dense because they are hand troweled. The denseness of the floor has an impact on the overall quality of the polish. If the surface is hard and dense, the polish is clear and glossy. If it’s not as dense, the polish will be slightly dull and wavy. You won’t get a clear, consistent polish from one corner of the floor to another so if you want perfect edges, you might want to choose a different option.

Polished concrete floors are very smooth and can be slippery when wet. If you expect your floor to be wet regularly, you should choose a different option or add some sort of texture to the floor. Because concrete is a hard floor, falls can be painful and cause injuries.

How to Create a Non-Slip Concrete Surface

Concrete can be very slippery, especially if you polish it to a glossy shine and want a mirror like finish. This is usually not a problem in areas with low to medium traffic and where the surface doesn’t get wet. People can walk over the surface without any accidents. But in high-traffic and wet areas, concrete can become slippery. In such conditions, we at Custom Concrete Floors recommend non slip concrete finishes and here’s how we do it: non slip concrete floor ottawa

Broom Finish

This is one of the most common methods to make concrete slip-resistant in areas where the look of the surface isn’t of great concern. It’s easy to create this textured surface by following the steps listed below:

• We pour in the slab.
• Strike the excess concrete off the surface with screed.
• Tamp down on the surface with a bull float
• We wait until the bleed water has completely evaporated.
• Trowel all the lines left behind by the bull float.
• Use a special concrete broom to add texture to the surface.
• Let the concrete cure.

This gives the concrete surface a textured, non-slip finish that ensures there’ll be no accidents.

Gritty Sealers

If you want to add an attractive finish to the non slip concrete surface, you can’t use the broom method. In such cases, gritty sealers will do a better job. Sealer manufacturers now offer grit that we can add to the final coat to give the surface a non-slip finish.

Through this method, you can ensure the surface looks good but still has some texture in order to prevent accidents. The best grit is made from ground polyurethane as it doesn’t compromise the look of the finish. It’s transparent and light would just pass through it and let the beauty of the finish shine.

Some contractors do use aluminum oxide or silica sand grit but they don’t work as effectively, and will alter the finish of the surface. These materials are rarely used in modern products because most customers don’t like the results they give.

You can also install slip-resistant tape manufactured by companies like 3M in some applications. If you have any questions about non slip concrete or want a free, no-obligation estimate, give us at Custom Concrete Floors a call at 613 327 9127. You can also fill in this contact us form and we’re reply as soon as possible.

Fixing Basement Floor Cracks In Concrete

Cracks in a concrete basement floor might seem intimidating at first, but they’re really easy to repair. You shouldn’t be alarmed when you see a long, thin crack on the surface, because it’s almost inevitable with basement concrete flooring and can be easily fixed. When concrete dries it hardens and shrinks, which can lead to cracks during the installation process. The movement of the building and the weather will only contribute to this problem.Polished concrete ottawa crack repair

At Custom Concrete Floors, we recommend that you fix the problem as quickly as you can. If water or moisture seeps into the crack, it can damage the floor even further. Here are some tips on how to repair concrete cracks in your floor.

  • Examine It- The first step is to examine the crack and determine just how wide and long it is. Some cracks require nothing more than masonry crack filler. That would seal the crack and create an even surface.
  • Clean the Area- Once you’ve determined the size and seriousness of the crack, clean the area with a wire brush or a rag. The idea is to remove all debris from the crack because this will allow the concrete patch to adhere to the surface better.
  • Chisel- Once the surface is clean, it’s time to fix the crack. As we mentioned before, small cracks only need masonry crack filler and a caulking gun. You need to fill the crack, tamp it down to eliminate air pockets, and level the surface.

For wider cracks that exceed 1 inch in size, you will have to chisel the edges and widen the cracks by about a quarter of an inch on both sides. This will remove all loose concrete from the edges.

  • Clean and Apply –After you have chiseled the sides, clean the surface and make sure there’s no debris. If you use a vinyl patching compound, you can mix it and apply directly to the crack.

If you use patching mortar, mix it well a bonding agent instead of water to ensure the compound adheres to the edges of the crack. After this, you only need to tamp the surface to remove air pockets and complete the finish.

As you can see, it’s very easy to repair concrete cracks in a basement floor. If you have any questions about concrete floor cracks or want a free, no-obligation estimate, give us at Custom Concrete Floors a call at 613 327 9127. You can also fill in this contact us form and we’re reply as soon as possible.

Garage Floor Resurfacing in Ottawa

garage floor resurfacing in ottawa custom concrete floorsGarage floor resurfacing in Ottawa can completely revamp and modernize the look of your garage. No matter how oil stained, pitted, or abused your garage floor is, you can easily correct all its flaws and make it look brand new. It’s not a very difficult project to do and your new floor would be ready to use in no time. If you follow the steps listed below, your garage surface will have a perfect finish.

Prepare the Surface

Your first step should be to evaluate the surface and make sure it’s sound. If the concrete surface isn’t firm and durable, resurfacing will only damage the concrete floor further. If you have any large cracks or dents in the concrete, you should repair it before you resurface it. The process is simple and doesn’t take too much time. You need a perfectly even surface for your concrete floor finish to look attractive.

The surface needs to be absolutely free of dust and debris before you apply the resurfacer. You can use a garden hose with sufficient pressure or a pressure washer to clean the surface thoroughly. You would need at least 3,500 psi of water pressure to clean the floor well. Any stains, oils, paints, and chemical stains should also be removed from the surface.

Once the surface is prepared, mix once bag of resurfacer at a time. We recommend that you mix with cold water in warmer temperatures and with warm water in cooler temperatures. You should let the mixture rest for a few moments, mix it thoroughly again until it’s syrupy in texture.

It’s a good idea to be organized and have all your tools at hand before you apply the resurfacer. Make sure that the floor is clean before you pour the mixture on one section of it and spread it quickly with a long-handle squeegee. This will ensure that the resurfacer spreads evenly across the surface. Make sure that you scuff the surface with a broom to add a little more texture. This will ensure the floor isn’t too slippery.

After all, the resurfacing process needs to cure for at least 8 to 24 hours before you use it. If you have any questions about garage floor resurfacing  in Ottawa or want a free, no-obligation estimate, give us at Custom Concrete Floors a call at 613 327 9127. Concrete Flooring for Kitchens – Things to Consider

Until a few years ago, concrete floors were considered dull, cold, industrial, and unsuitable for residential applications. People preferred warmer tones provided for wood or the elegance of stone to concrete. Over the years, concrete has become the most popular flooring choice for commercial as well as residential use.

So, concrete isn’t a bad choice for your home or even your kitchen. At Custom Concrete Floors, we recommend that you consider what’s mentioned here before you install a concrete floor in your kitchen.

Choosing a Finish

There are several finish options available to you. You can choose one depending on the effect you wish to achieve. The most popular finishes for kitchens are:

  • Polished and Honed – Concrete can be polished and honed to a very fine degree. You can get a matte, satin finish, or a high-gloss finish on your kitchen floor. As a kitchen is usually a high-traffic area, it would be a good idea to apply sealers that add a little more grip and traction to the floor. That would prevent you from slipping.
  • Acid Stained – Acid staining is caused by a chemical reaction between concrete and a solution of water, acid, and inorganic salts. The results are usually stunning as the surface develops stains in a variety of colours and patterns.
  • Colour Hardener – This finish can only be applied if the concrete is newly poured in. Before the concrete dries, the colour hardener is added to it. This allows the colours to sink in and become a permanent part of the floor. The colour would remain true despite any wear, and tear.

Sealing and Maintenance

It’s important to regularly seal and maintain the concrete in kitchens. Kitchen floors are usually exposed to moisture and stains. If you want to ensure that the floor isn’t permanently damaged, you need to seal it every 1 or 2 years. This will ensure your concrete floor continues to look great and is well protected. As long as the floor is sealed, it will be a stress-free and easy to maintain choice for your home.

Concrete floors can be a little hard on your feet so we recommend that you place an area rug near your cooking station to cushion your feet. If you have any questions about concrete kitchen floors or want a free, no-obligation estimate, give us at Custom Concrete Floors a call at 613 327 9127. How to Avoid Moisture Related Problems with Concrete Sealers

Decorative concrete floors come in a variety of colours and finishes and can enhance the look and feel of your home. However, moisture can ruin these floors. If it gets trapped between the concrete and the sealant, you can see a visible white cast on the floor that scars the look of the surface.

If you want to avoid moisture problems, careful application is key. At Custom Concrete Floors, we take every precaution possible during the application process to ensure that the sealers sit well and there’s no moisture trapped underneath.  Some other things that can be done to avoid moisture-related problems are:

The Sealant’s Contact with Moisture

The sealer shouldn’t come in contact with moisture during application. Every seasoned contractor is aware of this fact. That’s why it’s important not to apply sealers when it’s raining or if there’s a large amount of moisture in the air. If the sealants are applied during such weather conditions, there’s always a chance that the moisture will be caught between the sealant and the concrete floor and that can cause a white film on the surface.

Difference Between Sealers

Different types of sealers have different responses to moisture. Curing and sealing compounds are much more resistant to moisture than decorative sealers. The cure and seal can be applied to green concrete, which has high levels of moisture. There would be no film of white on the surface.

Decorative sealers aren’t as resistant to moisture. The concrete floor needs to cure for a full 28 days before the decorative sealers can be applied. If these sealers are applied before the concrete is completely cured, you’ll soon see the white film that ruins the design of your decorative finish.

The Permeability of the Sealers

Some sealers are more permeable than others. They allow more moisture to pass through the membrane and into the concrete. This makes them vulnerable to moisture-related problems. The permeability of the sealer depends on the solids content and the thickness of the sealer.

If the content and thickness is right, the sealer is more resistant to moisture. If it’s low, it’s more vulnerable to it. It’s a good idea to apply a thick coat of sealer with adequate solids content to keep moisture problems at bay.

Industrial Flooring Ideas

It’s always a challenge to find the right flooring for commercial or industrial applications. In residential industrial concrete flooring ottawa custom applications, the requirements are modest and the floors don’t endure much wear and tear. The foot traffic is moderate, the maintenance and care is usually consistent, and the floor isn’t exposed to abuse.

The conditions are drastically different in commercial and industrial applications. At Custom Concrete Floors, we’re often asked which kind of flooring is ideal for industrial applications and our answer is almost always concrete. Here are some suggestions that would help.

Coated Concrete Floors

Our first suggestion is always coated concrete floors, especially if you’re on a budget and need the surface ready quickly. There are several different kinds of coating available in the market. For industrial applications, we believe that polyurethane coatings are the best. This coating will withstand chemical and oil spills, high foot traffic, and vehicular movement easily. Polyurethane coatings will also last for about 5 to 8 years.

However, this coating is a little expensive. A more affordable alternative is epoxy coating. It’s easier to apply and will offer some level of protection against chemical and oil spills. It’s very affordable and relatively easy to apply. Epoxy coatings will also last for about 3 to 5 years.

Polished Concrete

Polished concrete is one of the most common floors found in industrial properties. In fact, polished concrete was popular in such properties well before it became chic to install in residential applications. This is an excellent industrial flooring option. The polishing process ensures that the surface isn’t very porous. The densifiers applied during the polishing process harden the surface of the concrete to make it more resilient.

Polished concrete is highly resistant to stains caused by oils and chemical spills. It’s also very easy to maintain as it requires just an occasional wet mop. The surface can have a matt/high gloss finish, depending on your requirements; it can also handle considerable amount of foot traffic.

Polished concrete floors will last for a very long time and won’t need to be polished for a number of years, based on your use. These two flooring options are ideal for industrial applications. They look attractive, are low-maintenance, and resilient.

Benefits of Polished Concrete Floors in Residential Applications

An increasing number of homeowners are installing polished concrete floors in their home. Here are the most common reasons why:

  • Maintenance and Cleaning – Polished concrete is very easily to maintain. All you need to do is dust and mop it regularly.
  • Resilient – This type of concrete floor is also very resilient and not as prone to damage when compared to regular hardwood flooring.

Benefits of Polished Concrete Floors in Commercial Applications

  • Cost Effective – The natural concrete grade or slab on your commercial property can be polished and finished without a long installation and clean up process.
  • Foot Traffic – Polished concrete will endure considerable amounts of foot traffic. There is no need to wax or strip the floor and the wear and tear is outstanding.
  • Maintenance and Resilience – As we mentioned before, this flooring option doesn’t require much by way of maintenance. The hardened, glossy surface will also resist oil and chemical spills as well as marks from forklifts, etc.
